National Conference - Re-imagining the City: A New Urban Order
11 - 13 October 2010, Cape Town. DAG will host a three-day National Conference in Cape Town with the Global Land Tool Network (UN-Habitat) to develop recommendations for the institutionalisation of the ‘right to the city’ in South Africa. This includes discussion of regulatory and fiscal land management tools, and mechanisms for democratic urban governance in South African cities. The conference will bring together a wide range of international and local experts to share good practice and will support the development of a community of practice on 'right to the city' issues.

Theme 1: Land and property rights for a new urban order
Theme 2: Citizenship and the democratic management of cities in a new urban order
Theme 3: Instruments to finance a new urban order: land value capture
Theme 4: Reconfiguring a new urban order through medium-density housing
Theme 5: Community-centered housing in a new urban order
Guest speakers invited include: UN-HABITAT, Housing Development Agency, South African Cities Network, Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, National Department of Human Settlements, University College of London, Lincoln Land Institute, City of Cape Town, City of Johannesburg Legal Resource Centre and others.
