Land Value Capture and Land Management mini-courses

14 - 16 October, Cape Town.  This series of mini-courses will be convened by DAG with the Erasmus University Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) in the Netherlands. The course, which builds on the first course held in 2008, will develop skills and knowledge amongst government officials, especially at local government level, on the potential benefits and requirements of value capture as a tool to produce greater municipal revenue. It will also cover how this revenue can be redistributed for pro-poor urban development. The course aims to generate ideas for effectively managing urban land by considering the current practice of municipalities which are implementing fiscal and regulatory tools, with input from international experts in the field.

The course is designed for government officials from departments including finance, properties, valuations, land use management, planning, housing and others.

International urban land management specialists from Latin America, Europe and the USA, as well as South African municipalities will present five stand-alone mini-courses over three days. Each mini-course is R800 to attend.

Mini-course 1: Urban land management and land value capture
Mini-course 2: The challenge of informality and urban land markets
Mini-course 3: Shortcomings and possibilities of the current municipal rating system
Mini-course 4: The state of municipal finance in South Africa: opportunities for land value capture and service delivery
Mini-course 5: Living Classroom: Cape Town under the spot light – opportunities for land value capture
